From Monday, September 23 to Friday, September 27, we will be celebrating Banned Books Week in the library!
What is Banned Books Week? In the words of the American Library Association:
Banned Books Week (September 22-28, 2019) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
Come by the library this week to check out a frequently banned or challenged book from our display near the library desk. You can also help yourself to a free bookmark and read interactive wall art displays on the history of Banned Books Week. In the meantime, look over this list of the Top Ten Most Challenged books of the last years and see how many are on your shelf!
